Q & A WITH BEN
What events do you enjoy / specialise in?
I specialise in mixed crowd events, where multiple tastes need to be catered to while keeping the music coherent. I love any event that is high energy, regardless of the reason whether school disco, formal, corporate or wedding.
When not performing what do you listen to for pleasure?
Deep House, 90s & 2000s RnB, Motown and Funk. I also have a soft spot for Bruno Mars, The Weeknd & Justin Timberlake.
What do you do in your free time?
A lot of my free time is spent working on mixes and mashups and finding new combinations of songs. I love going to the gym and hanging out with friends. Whenever I have a day off there is a pretty good chance you will find me at the beach.
What makes you different to other DJs?
I enjoy an extremely diverse range of music and I love the different styles for different reasons. I love Disco, Funk and Soul for the rhythm and the pure gravitational pull to the dance floor. RnB is another favourite, because it is sexy and fun and I also love the epic rock and roll singalongs that create a feeling of unity on the dance floor.
I get a lot of satisfaction from combining tracks from different styles and eras to create an experience that brings together people of all ages to enjoy the dance floor together. Playing to a private event requires a different focus than playing in a club and a greater eye for detail in how people are responding to your selections.
What is your favourite moment as a DJ?
I don’t have one favourite moment as there are a lot of memorable moments that have left me in an afterglow for the entire drive home from the event. My favourite feeling is during dessert when you are starting to build up the energy ready for dancing, everyone’s voices get louder and the energy of the entire room changes. People start to groove in their chairs and friends sing along to songs that represent shared memories. It is the time of the night when the focus shifts to fun, and it happens long before anybody’s feet hit the dance floor.
What would your dream event to DJ be?
DJing for the Tesla Christmas party where Elon Musk raps the entirety of Getting’ Jiggy Wit’ It and they pay me by giving me a space ship.
